Rising Cost of a Funeral blog

The cost of a funeral may not be something that you have given much thought to. However with the average cost of a funeral rising year on year, this subject is something you should consider sooner rather than later.

Funeral costs are rising at a rate of 7 per cent per year with the average funeral today costing £3,2841. The average cost of a funeral is now rising at a faster rate than inflation and if this trend continues, that average cost is expected to increase to more than £5,000k in 2020.2

The increase in costs is mainly due to a rise in cremation and burial fees which have increased by 51% and 69% respectively since 2007. However, discretionary funeral expenses such as headstones, catering, hearse, flowers and care of the deceased have also recorded an increase year on year.

Due to these increases, more people are now struggling to cope with the rising costs of organising a funeral and are falling into 'funeral poverty' (the national funeral funding shortfall). Over the past 3 years it has been estimated that funeral poverty has increased by more than 50% with more and more families struggling to give their loved ones the funeral they deserve.3

As funeral costs rise each year the financial burden that death brings is quite large, and as a result Britons aged 50 and over are now being urged to plan for their funerals in advance in an attempt to protect loved ones from the ever increasing expense.

More and more people are now taking out prepaid funeral plans in an attempt to protect their loved ones against the financial burden of a funeral. A prepaid funeral is the most cost effective way to protect your loved ones against rising funeral costs. A funeral plan is also a secure way to avoid the rising funeral costs and to pay the cost of your funeral at today’s prices.

Bereavement can be a tough time for anyone, and with the increasing cost of arranging a funeral, it is comforting to know that the financial burden of a funeral won’t be passed onto loved ones.

At Open we offer prepaid funeral plans to suit all needs and budgets. What’s more, an Open funeral plan not only lets you plan the cost of your funeral at today’s prices but it can also ensure that your wishes are carried out exactly as you would want.
